Asbestos
Most products produced today do not contain asbestos. However, before 1978, many household building products contained asbestos. Asbestos is most commonly found on installation in boilers, pipes, and attics. If you breathe asbestos fibers, you may increase the risk of several serious diseases, including asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer.
How Do You Get Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is caused by inhaling asbestos fibers. The asbestos fibers can travel into the lungs or abdomen and lodge in the mesothelium, a protective membrane that covers the organs. Mesothelioma occurs as a result of damage to cells and DNA, causing tumors to develop decades after asbestos exposure.
